ACTION!
LA Landmarks Light Blue and White for spcaLA
On April 7th, LAX and the Ferris wheel at Pacific Park on the Santa Monica Pier will light blue and white in support of spcaLA! We are thrilled that these Los Angeles landmarks are supporting spcaLA in this way.
How did this come about? Well, another animal welfare agency who does not serve the Southern California area asked these two landmarks to light up in their colors. spcaLA is happy to support other agencies in the interests of animal welfare, but feels it is unfair for an agency that doesn't serve Los Angeles to promote themselves here as if they do! We are thrilled that LAX and Santa Monica Pier understand this and are willing to stand up for your spcaLA and our abused and neglected animals.
Unfortunately, this kind of confusion is rampant and something that spcaLA battles daily. spcaLA wants to make it clear that funds donated to spcaLA serve animals and people in Los Angeles. It's important to know where your donations are going, so if you have any questions, please contact our Fund Development Department at funddevelopment@spcaLA.com or (323) 730-5300 x253 or take a look at this document, "What's In A Name?"
If you would like to make a donation in the spirit of LAX and the Ferris wheel at Pacific Park on the Santa Monica Pier lighting blue and white in support of spcaLA, please click here.

spcaLA SHINING STAR
spcaLA is very fortunate to have outstanding staff and volunteers working for our organization. Over the next year, we will be introducing you to some of spcaLA's SHINING STARS! This month, meet:
Alma, spcaLA Humane Education Department
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN WITH spcaLA: I've been with the spcaLA for a little over four years. BEST THINGS ABOUT YOUR JOB? We run a variety of programs that involve both kids and animals. The best part of my job is watching a child we've been working with - who may not have ever had a pet - bond with a shelter dog. Many of the kids we work with come from dysfunctional or broken homes, so it's incredibly inspiring (and moving) to witness a child's love for a homeless or abandoned shelter animal grow.

WHAT KIND OF TRAINING (education/career path) DO YOU HAVE? Prior to becoming a Human Educator, I had over 8 years of experience working with kids ranging from Pre-K to 8th grade. Before joining spcaLA, I majored in Animal Health Science at Cal Poly Pomona, and I'm currently enrolled at Cal State Los Angeles, where I am looking forward to receiving a Bachelor's degree in the near future. I'm certified as a California State Child Abuse Mandated Reporter, and I've also attended a number of courses and classes related to canine and human behavior.
WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE PEOPLE TO KNOW ABOUT THE spcaLA HUMANE EDUCATION DEPARTMENT? The Humane Education staff has formed a very close-knit group, and I feel that our ability to model teamwork, respect, and genuine friendship translates over to help the kids we work with become kinder and more empathetic. Photo above: Alma's co-worker, Annemieke; the amazing Susie, and Alma.
DO YOU HAVE ANY PET TIPS YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE? The most important tip I can give dog owners is socialize, socialize, socialize! The better socialized a puppy is early on, the more well-rounded it will be as an adult.
DO YOU HAVE PETS? Yes, I have two dogs, a Pit Bull mix and a Mastiff mix, and one three-legged cat named Tripod.
WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO IN 2009? Professionally, in 2009 I'm looking forward to growing our volunteer base with the hopes of reaching out to a larger portion of Los Angeles. Personally, I'm looking forward to a summer full of camping, hiking, and white-water rafting!
