ACTION!
July 4 Pet Safety
Firework displays and parties are American traditions on the Fourth of July, but pets can sometimes be startled by all the commotion of visitors and loud noises. Every Independence Day shelters fill with lost and injured pets. spcaLA recommends taking these simple precautions to keep your pet happy and safe this July 4th:
- Dogs and cats should be microchipped and wear current I.D. tags at all times. This is the best way to ensure a happy reunion if your pet goes missing.
- Keep pets safe and secure inside your home or a covered run. Loud noises, such as fireworks, can cause a dog to jump a fence and run away from home or a cat to hide for days. Keeping your pet indoors and secure will also keep them from dangerous roadways.
- If you're hosting a party, keep your pets in a cool, well-ventilated room with a radio playing softly in the background. Include your pet's favorite toys and pet bed for comfort. Do this as well if you are going out but your pet is staying in.
- Do not tie your dog up outside to keep him/her from escaping. The loud noise from the fireworks can frighten your pet making them more likely to attempt to flee. Dogs can seriously injure themselves, or even die, trying to escape.
- Educate children to not scare pets with firecrackers or sparklers.

PAW'LLYWOOD WALK OF FAME
Visit spcaLA's pet adoption centers in South Bay and Long Beach and meet pets like Oogy and Lilly. Remember these animals might be adopted at any time so call the Pet Adoption Center where he/she is staying in advance.
Oogy is Oodles of Fun! Meet Oogy, a 6 year old Domestic Short Hair. He's a sweet and laid back cat that loves to follow you from room to room and cozy up with you at night. He is full of love but wants to be your one and only, so no other cats in the home. Being a little older himself, he prefers the company of adults. The way to Oogy's heart: give him pets! Once you adopt Oogy, get him pet food at the spcaLA Marketplace. Click here for coupons.
Pretty as a Picture This is Lily, a lovely Pit Bull mix at the South Bay Pet Adoption Center. She was brought in as a stray so she needs an owner who can spend time with her and make her feel secure. She loves toys, especially ones that squeak and she likes treats, too. She is curious to know what people are doing around her, so with a little help, she would be a great companion! Lily's soft-slip number is 09-02802. If you'd like to get her bathed after you adopt her, take her to the spcaLA Grooming Salon. Click here for coupons.

PAW'LLYWOOD ENDING
Mark & Brian Pet Adoption Day 2009

The 2009 Pet Adoption Day was a huge success! Thanks to all who came out and visited with our vendors VPI, Natural Balance, Wellness, Natura Pet Products, Scooble.com, My Pet Lawyer, and sipped delicious beverages from Honest Tea and Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf. All the Mark & Brian fans were tons of fun and Mark, Brian and Cynthia did a great job keeping the crowd entertained.
The highlight of the event was the super-excellent adoption of a sweet German Shepherd mix (pictured below) who had been with spcaLA for 2 1/2 years! She had a rough start in life but the spcaLA staff and volunteers worked with her diligently and she had became of favorite of many. She was adopted by an awesome family and we at spcaLA could not be happier. In the words of one staffer, "The whole event was worth it just for that one adoption!"
Thanks to the huge promotion by 95.5 KLOS spcaLA adopted out more than 300 pets during the event and in the weeks leading up to it.
BIG KUDOS to all the spcaLA staff and volunteers who made this event go off without a hitch. It simply could not have been done without your hard work and dedication.
If you missed the event but still want to contribute, you can donate to the Mark & Brian Spay Neuter Fund by purchasing a 2009 Pet Adoption Day bandana. Proceeds benefit the spcaLA Specialty Spay Neuter Center.
