ACTION!

Always Be Prepared

In California, there are several potential natural disaster situations such as fires, mudslides, and earthquakes.  Disaster preparedness is important for your family and household.  When planning for an emergency, don't forget to include your pets.  The following are the most important things pet owners can do to prepare their pets for an emergency:

-Dogs and cats should be microchipped and wear current I.D. tags at all times. This can make reuniting easier if you are separated from your pet.
-If roads are blocked, professional help may not be possible, so familiarize yourself with pet CPR, resuscitation, and general first aid procedures. Your quick action could save your pet's life.
-Try not to display stress and anxiety.  Most animals are very aware of their owners' emotions and can detect stress. This can cause otherwise calm pets to display aggressive behaviors.
-Continuously check pet structures and favorite hiding places for hazardous debris.
-Display "Pet Alert" signs for doors and windows or make your own by listing pets on a 3X5 card and displaying it prominently.   By displaying "Pet Alert" and "Animal Evacuated" signs authorities are alerted that all pets have been removed from the premises so emergency teams can respond where assistance is actually needed.  Both signs are available at spcaLA Marketplaces or online at http://www.spcala.com/ .
-Keep your pets' vaccinations current.  Pets may become disoriented and stray, or be housed in shelters with other animals, thereby potentially being exposed to infectious diseases.
-Alert local shelters immediately upon discovering that your pet is missing.

spcaLA also recommends using the following checklist to prepare a "Pet Disaster Kit."
-Current copy of vaccination records
-Veterinarian's contact information
-Photos of your animal(s) in case you become separated
-Collar, leash and carrier to safely transport your pet(s) (Extras are great to help lost/stray animals)
-Minimum of three weeks supply of your pet(s) regular food and bottled water
-Bowls, can opener and utensils for feeding your pet(s)
-Treats and toys to comfort and ease stress
-First aid kit (should include antiseptic, topical ointment, dressing, any prescribed pet medications and pet first aid book.)
-Soft muzzle
-Blanket or towels
-Disposable baggies to pick up after your dog(s)
-Cat litter, scooper and temporary litter box (disposable aluminum foil pans work well)
-Create a plan with a trusted friend or neighbor who will get your pet(s) to safety, should you be at work when disaster strikes
-A back-up plan to board your animal during a disaster (veterinarian, boarding facility, etc.)

spcaLA's Disaster Animal Response Team (DART) responds to animals in need in the event of a natural disaster.  Members of DART and spcaLA's Law Enforcement Division also provide information to the community through safety and community fairs.  If you would like to help spcaLA continue to reach the community and pets in need by offering information and assistance, please click here .

spcaLA SHINING STAR

spcaLA is very fortunate to have outstanding staff and volunteers working for our organization.  Over the next year, we will be introducing you to some of spcaLA's SHINING STARS!  This month, meet:

Corporal McDaniel, spcaLA Law Enforcement Division

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN WITH spcaLA:  I have been an employee since October 11th, 2004.

BEST THINGS ABOUT YOUR JOB?  Rescuing animals from a bad situation and then seeing our medical staff rehabilitate that animal back to health for the happy endings, a perfect example: Goonie the Chihuahua. Editor's note: Goonie is a Chihuahua who had been attacked by a larger dog and was in pretty bad shape.  spcaLA's veterinary team cared for him and eventually he was adopted by a loving family.

WHAT KIND OF TRAINING (education/career path) DO YOU HAVE? I am a 2002 graduate of Rio Hondo Police Academy Class # 164 and I attended the Humane Academy in San Diego, where I had approximately 1,000 training hours with my Field Training Officer, I am a certified Field Training Officer as well as a Taser Instructor.   I also attend on-going training classes as well as teach them for the spcaLA.

WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE PEOPLE TO KNOW ABOUT spcaLA's LAW ENFORCEMENT DIVISION: Our structure is the same as any police/law enforcement agency within the State of California, the only difference is we handle animal cruelty complaints. We are sworn Law Enforcement Officers with police powers. We enforce the state Penal Codes. We can handle animal cruelty complaints anywhere within the state of California. We are not a governmental animal control agency, which means we do not handle animal licensing, leash law violations or dog barking complaints. Our department objective is to educate the animal's owner/care giver on the violations and to help them correct the situation. If the first step of education does not work then we step up our enforcement actions in terms of written citations or legal action through the court system. This is a great job and a great department and I am enjoying my time here.

WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE PEOPLE TO KNOW ABOUT DART?    DART is short for Disaster Animal Rescue Team. This is a program that was founded by Captain David Havard who leads our Law Enforcement Division. DART was put together because of the need to rescue animals in disasters. DART consists of employees and volunteers trained in specialized areas. These areas consist of large animal handling, veterinary care and animal housing. DART trains on a monthly basis. DART has been to several major disasters out of the state such as Hurricanes Katrina, Rita and Ike as well as the California wild fires. ( Photo above: Corporal McDaniel cares for a cat during Hurricane Ike)

WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO THIS SUMMER AND/OR THE REMAINDER OF 2009? I hope this is a nice quiet year for disasters and to continue my education.

PAW'LLYWOOD WALK OF FAME

Visit spcaLA's pet adoption centers in South Bay and Long Beach and meet pets like Tortoise and Chubbers.  Remember these animals might be adopted at any time so call the Pet Adoption Center   where he/she is staying in advance.

Special Cat Seeks Special Owner    This is Tortoise, a 7 year old female Tori.  Tortoise's owner passed away so she has come to stay with spcaLA at the South Bay PAC in Hawthorne.  You will most likely find her hiding in the bottom of a cat tree.  She is very shy and needs a quiet environment in an adult household with no other animals.  If you think you can offer Tortoise (#09-02192) a new home, you will definitely want to get her a nice cat house to nestle in at the spcaLA Marketplace .     Click here  for coupons.
Chubber Wubbers!   This is Chubbers, and like most people, he is a little on the chubby side. He is a sweet and vivacious little guy with lots of love to give.  He likes playing in the yard and going for walks. Chubbers will make the perfect companion and lap dog. If he sounds like your dream come true, come by and meet him at the P.D. Pitchford CAV in Long Beach.  Chubber's soft-slip number is 09-02802. If you'd like to get him bathed before you take him home, take Chubbers to the spcaLA Grooming Salon Click here   for coupons.

PAW'LLYWOOD ENDING

Hero Dog 2008

spcaLA presented its 27th Annual National Hero Dog Award to Miley, a Terrier mix from Van Buren, AR.  The ceremony was held at Star Plaza at Staples Center in Los Angeles on May 19th.

Stacie Pitts was fast asleep the night of December 7, 2008.  Her 1 year-old Terrier mix, Miley, woke her up in the middle of the night, and Stacie went back to sleep. But, Miley persisted.  The second time Stacie awoke, she was overcome with nausea and suffering from a severe headache.  She knew something was wrong.  She roused her step-daughter and fiancé.  Both were experiencing the same symptoms.  911 was called and the family rushed to the hospital.  There, they discovered that each suffered from poisoning with carbon monoxide levels of 17-25.  Without Miley, the family could have suffered severe brain damage or death.

"This is just one of the many examples demonstrating the strength of the human animal bond.  Treating your pet with love and respect can be returned by amazing heroic acts by companion animals," said spcaLA President Madeline Bernstein.  "Carbon monoxide is odorless and colorless, yet Miley either knew she didn't feel well, or sensed that her owner, Stacie wasn't well.  Without Miley, Stacie and her family could have easily perished."

After the incident, Miley appeared fine and showed no outward signs of effects from the carbon monoxide.  Just to be safe, Miley was checked out by spcaLA Director of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Karen Halligan.  Dr. Halligan gave Miley a thorough check-up including blood work.  Dr. Halligan says that Miley is healthy and has no lasting effects from the incident.

Miley received a plaque commemorating her Hero Dog status by spcaLA President, Madeline Bernstein.  Hotel accommodations were provided by Sheraton Downtown Los Angeles, The Los Angeles Dodgers provided tickets to a game, and Natura Pet Products provided Miley with a year's supply of dog food.

For more than two decades, spcaLA has recognized the heroic efforts of a dog that is a companion animal and not formally trained for rescues or law enforcement.
