SPOTLIGHT
Designer Dogs

In the past, spcaLA has been quick to denounce the designer dog trend of "Cockerdoodles" and "Peekapoos" as elitist and unfair to the good ol' American mutt.  But, now they concede that the ability to acquire exclusive breeds is a reflection of one's status and exquisite taste.  spcaLA is proud to introduce the uber-exclusive spcaLA brand of Designer Dog.  For pet owners who require a pooch that is rare and matchless, here is a guide to some of spcaLA's special mixes:

LaPitty (Labrador/Pitbull mix).  An active voyager who seeks adventure, this high energy hybrid loves to "task." Enroll LaPitty in spcaLA's Training Department's doggie education classes (like Harvard for dogs!) to keep him on track.  LaPitty seeks a vigorous and canine knowledgeable companion.

Chihuerrier (Chihuahua/Terrier mix).  The Paris Hilton of designer dogs, this bitch craves attention.  Chihuerriers are rambunctious terriers with the demure affections of a Chihuahua.  Known for her transportability and playfulness, the Chihuerrier is well-suited for urban life.  This blend needs plenty of exercise and mental activity and is a good choice for city dwellers.

Sheprador (Shepherd/Labrador mix).    These pups are a hybrid between two energetic breeds.  The Sheprador can find purpose and entertainment snooping through the kitchen cabinets or outside chasing squirrels.  This mix is not a lay-about and being forced to do so can make them stir-crazy.  The Sheprador makes a perfect companion for jogging or a game of fetch.

Terripoo (Terrier/Poodle Mix).  Brawny and brainy, this little heart-grabber has plenty of charm and doggy wit.  Terripoo is an active and intelligent breed who loves a lot of stimulation.  A good choice for vivacious urbanites who enjoy dog-related activities.

These designer dogs are available exclusively at spcaLA's two pet adoption centers (PAC): the South Bay PAC in Hawthorne and the P.D. Pitchford Companion Animal Village in Long Beach.  New pooches are emerging daily!  Visit http://spcala.com/ to view available dogs.

Why have a "Chiweenie" or a "Whoodle" like everyone else when you can have a one-of-a-kind from spcaLA?

T-shirts of spcaLA's Designer Dogs are available here .

ACTION!

President Obama's proposed budget includes a tax revision that curbs the ability to reduce tax bills through charitable donations.  Any proposal that would reduce the availability and size of charitable deductions is not the answer to our economic woes.

It is precisely during tough times that those on the edge of solvency need more assistance and those that were stable and proud are forced, sometimes for the first time, to ask for help. Already vulnerable classes become more so, and those who cannot ask hope they will not be forgotten.

It is the non-profit community that often provides relief, fills the gaps, shelters the homeless (both human and animal) and provides a safety net for those falling through the cracks.  Non-profits also intercede when government benefits cease. It is a cruel irony that donations drop during hard times just when they are needed the most.

This administration, in its focus on national service should make it more attractive to be philanthropic by offering maximum deductions, tax credits and other incentives for charitable giving. Such rebates would not only stimulate the economy, encourage philanthropy, promote community service but actually save lives.  The presence and effect of charities is often inchoate and amorphous.  Their absence actual misery.

Please take the time to  click here to email President Obama  to ask that the new proposed budget not cut charitable donations.  Here is a sample:

Dear President Obama:

Please reconsider your tax revision on charitable donations.  Now more than ever, people should be encouraged to give.  Non-profit organizations, like Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Los Angeles (spcaLA), need donations in order to serve their communities.

Sincerely,
A Non-Profit Supporter

Thank you for your participation in this effort.  If you would like to make a donation to spcaLA so that we may continue to serve your community, please click here

spcaLA SHINING STAR

spcaLA is very fortunate to have outstanding staff and volunteers working for our organization.  Over the next year, we will be introducing you to some of spcaLA's SHINING STARS!  This month, meet:

Osvaldo, spcaLA Animal Care Attendant at spcaLA's Pet Hotel and Grooming Salon

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN WITH spcaLA?  I have been working for spcaLA for a little over 2 years.

BEST THINGS ABOUT YOUR JOB?  The best part of my job is knowing that people are taking an interest in our facility and are helping homeless animals everyday.  Also, working with dedicated staff that have similar goals as mine in making the Pet Hotel and Grooming Salon a successful and safe place for people to bring their pets.

WHAT KIND OF TRAINING DO YOU HAVE?  I have acquired quite a bit of working experience over the years.  I worked in one of the largest boarding and grooming and vet hospitals in Torrance, CA for a little more than 2 years.  I worked for one of the largest independent pet supply stores in Southern California for close to 3 years.  It was a very customer service oriented business and I acquired a lot of knowledge about pet nutrition.

WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE PEOPLE TO KNOW ABOUT THE spcaLA PET HOTEL?  People should know that the Pet Hotel is a very clean and safe place for people to leave their pets while they are away.  They can feel secure that we make it feel like a second home for our guests.

DO YOU HAVE A BOARDING PET TIP YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE? A good pet tip is that boarding can be a very stressful time for pets, so choosing the right facility is very important.  Make sure the facility is clean, has fresh flowing air, gives your pets plenty of one on one time with a person, and most importantly, treats your pets like their own and not like a business transaction.

DO YOU HAVE PETS?  I have 3 beautiful dogs, 2 birds, salt water fish, and koi fish.

WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO IN 2009?  I look forward to having more people come down and use our beautiful facilities and having a strong healthy year this 2009.
