SPOTLIGHT
DART at Wildfires
Wildfires are ablaze in Southern California and YOUR spcaLA's Disaster Animal Response Team (DART) was on the scene to help people and animals. DART responded Friday August 28 to the Rancho Palos Verdes fire where they evacuated horses. The team had no time to rest before they were deployed to the La Canada (Station) fires. DART set up our command center at the Hansen Dam Equestrian Center on Saturday and stayed on the scene through Wednesday afternoon. We were the first on the scene to help evacuate animals from an animal sanctuary in Sylmar and assisted many private residents. The team worked tirelessly to relocate, care for and feed more than 400 animals, including horses, llamas, sheep, goats, pigs, dogs, rooster and a buffalo.
In the course of our work, one of the DART vehicles was badly damaged and will need to be replaced. DART is funded entirely by donations without which our rescue efforts would not be possible. If you would like to make a donation to DART, please click here.
For more photos and details about DART's work at the Station fire, please go to the spcaLA website by clicking here.

ACTION!
Disaster Preparedness for Pets
The eruption of the Angeles National Forest blaze is another grim reminder that fire season is upon us. spcaLA strongly recommends pet owners ensure their pets’ safety in the event of an urgent situation or natural disaster.
There are simple things you can do to help make sure your pets are safe, like keeping current on vaccinations; having them microchipped; displaying a "pet alert" sign; creating a "Pet Disaster Kit" and making sure your pets are included in your contingency plans. Click here for all the information.
Need to get your pet vaccinated, spayed/neutered or microchipped? Make an appointment at the spcaLA Specialty Spay/Neuter Center.
Preparing for the worst may prevent the worst from happening.

PAW'LLYWOOD WALK OF FAME
Visit spcaLA's pet adoption centers in South Bay and Long Beach and meet pets like Kahlua and Buster. Remember these animals might be adopted at any time so call the Pet Adoption Center where he/she is staying in advance.

Kahlua is a sweet treat! Meet Kahlua, a 3 year old Pit Bull mix. She is a sweet energetic young lady looking for a forever home. Kahlua is currently working on her doggie manners so she can impress her new family. She is strong so she needs someone who can handle her strength. Kahua's soft-slip number is 09-04043 and she is staying at the P.D. Pitchford Companion Animal Village in Long Beach. Once you adopt Kahlua, treat her to a nice bath at the spcaLA Grooming Salon. Click here for coupons.
Good ol' Buster This is Buster, a lovely male tabby at the South Bay Pet Adoption Center. He was abandoned by his family when they lost their house due to foreclosure. Buster is playful and outgoing, okay with young kids, enjoys being groomed and loves to purr. His soft-slip number is 09-03913 and he is staying in the cattery at the South Bay Pet Adoption Center in Hawthorne. If you need cat supplies after you adopt Buster, get them at the spcaLA Marketplace. Click here for coupons.

PAW'LLYWOOD ENDING
Eagle Scout Helps Dogs Run Free!
One person can make such a huge difference! Case in point, Torrance Boy Scout Erik Schiller dramatically improved life for South Bay's shelter dogs and added to the facility by building a fence around the play yard. Now our shelter dogs can run free off leash in a nice grassy area!
Erik built the fence in South Bay in order to earn his Eagle Scout rank. He created a detailed written plan of how he would build the fence, raised money for materials, created a schematic, and managed a crew of Scouts and spcaLA staff to construct and paint the fence.
On August 14th, Erik's family and friends gathered with spcaLA Staff and volunteers for a ceremony to formally unveil the new fence and thank Erik for his hard work and generous contribution. He improved the quality of life of our shelter dogs and enhanced the South Bay PAC. This was also an opportunity for spcaLA staff to formally thank Erik for his hard work. A plaque is in place on the fence to mark Erik's achievement. A hearty thank you to Erik and Life Scout, Troop 4673!

Posing in front of the new fence, Scout Erik, spcaLA Humane Education's Alma Vera-Lima and one of the many shelter dogs who will be enjoying the new fenced-in play yard.
