Boarding & Grooming Facility Manager

JOB ANNOUNCEMENT

Primary Function: spcaLA is seeking an animal care professional with either kennel/grooming or retail experience or an animal science degree to manage  the daily operations of the Boarding and grooming facility and manage the daily operations to insure safe, sanitary and humane operations that are consistent with agency policy and in compliance with OSHA

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for answering client concerns as needed as well as handling billing and payment problems.
  • Monitors the overall operation of the reception area, boarding/ grooming facility and ensures it is kept organized and functional.
  • Responsible for direct contact with clients and maintains personal interaction with potential and current clients.
  • Management of employees, which includes: conducting performance reviews, reviewing job applications and interviewing applicants; hiring and training new employees
  • Responsible for ensuring adequate supplies and copies of printed material are on hand for office work and advertising.
  • Schedule personnel to insure adequate coverage for effective boarding and kennel operations.
  • Responsible for ensuring the boarding staff makes proper notes of any problems encountered while boarding, to include animals who do not eat well, have diarrhea, vomiting or other problems.
  • Works with staff to ensure proper boarding forms and database are maintained.
  • Ensure the daily schedule for feeding, walks, playing, grooming, etc. is properly maintained in conjunction with needs of the clients and ensures standards of cleanliness are followed by all members of the staff.
  • Intake and release of privately owned animals entering facility for boarding/grooming and determines the suitability of animals to be boarded and groomed.
  • Work directly with subordinates to ensure all responsible areas are operated in a timely and professional manner.
  • Meets with owners as needed to discuss overall behavior of boarded animals.
  • Assist in the coordination and completion of all periodic physical inventory counts
  • Ensure all pet and client needs and expectations are met
  • Animal handling care and knowledge necessary
  • Ensure the proper health care, appearance and maintenance of  boarding and grooming facility
  • Ability to work well and communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with the public and fellow employees.
  • Show maturity and good judgment; perform the job in a professional manner and work efficiently under pressure.
  • Excellent organizational skills with the proven ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Ability to function independently
  • Apply mathematical concepts such as addition, subtraction, fractions and percentages to practical situations.
  • Work different shifts, weekends and holidays as assigned.
  • Maintain records as required and review the daily paperwork including cash receipts, inventory. 
  • Effectively apply appropriate disciplinary action as necessary.
  • Manage multiple priorities and responsibilities. 
  • Monitor order and track usage of all supplies, following the proper purchasing procedure.

Supervisory Responsibilities: 

  • Directly supervise all boarding and grooming personnel, including groomers, receptionist, animal care attendants and volunteers.
  • Responsibilities include interviewing, training employees, supervising employees in the performance of their duties, and providing performance evaluations and appropriate disciplinary action as necessary.
  • Planning, coordinating and directing personnel training and staff development programs.  Prepare and implement training policies. 
  • Responsible for the positive and professional appearance of the boarding and grooming facility and staff.

Job Related and Essential Qualifications:

  • Previous retail management experience is preferred for this position.
  • Ability to utilize fiscal management procedures, budgets, statistics, and other administrative practices.
  • Experience working with animals in a sheltering or commercial environment is desirable.
  • Ability to instruct others regarding basic sales techniques
  • Ability to apply mathematical concepts such as addition, subtraction, fractions and percentages to practical situations.
  • Effectively handle problem situations involving the public.
  • Work well and communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with the public, fellow employees, staff and volunteers.
  • Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Flexibility to adapt to different support needs created by varying work styles.
  • Work efficiently under pressure and show maturity and good judgment.
  • Originate and execute projects with little supervision.
  • Ability to operate a vehicle observing legal and defensive driving practices. Must maintain insurability to operate agency vehicles as a condition of employment.
  • Work with and restrain animals of all sizes
  • No allergies to pets.

Knowledge of:

  • Fiscal management and procedures, budgets, negotiation skills and other administrative practices.
  • Basic domestic animal care and safe/humane animal handling.
  • Various breeds of dogs, cats and other domestic animals, various kinds of animal behavior and illness identification.
  • Usage of office equipment (computer, typewriter, copier, fax machine, telephone, etc.)

Physical demands:

  • While performing this job the employee is regularly required to use hands and fingers; handle or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; talk loudly and clearly; and hear.
  • Requires the mobility to stand, walk, sit, kneel, crouch and crawl.  Performs work that includes walking large dogs, lifting, carrying and/or pushing of 25 lbs. or more.
  • Must be able to tolerate loud animal noises and odors for extended periods of time
  • Endurance sufficient for standing and walking during entire shift
  • Occasional running to apprehend loose animals evading capture

Working Conditions:

  • Dealing with an environment in which the noise level is generally moderate, but on occasion will be high.
  • Possibly dealing with hostile public.
  • Possible exposure to parasites and infectious diseases.
