spcaLA Condemns “Better off Dead” Remarks Regarding Baby Polar Bear
Los Angeles – Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Los Angeles (spcaLA) is flabbergasted at the statements made by an alleged animal activist that a baby polar bear cub, born at a zoo, should be killed because caring for him would reduce the likelihood of success of reintroducing the cub back into the wild.
This individual is not representing the opinion of animal welfare advocates or activists. Regardless of one's opinion of zoos - it would be a horrific and perhaps an illegal act to intentionally kill the infant cub - not to mention the inappropriate educational message such a deed would convey. Given the frail status of the polar bear species, the activists' statement seems particularly irresponsible.
“As president of a 130-year-old organization dedicated to the prevention of cruelty to animals - I can only hope that members of the public recognize the importance of our duty to protect sentient beings, the necessity of our ability to empathize and respect life, and the clearly misguided statement of said self proclaimed spokesperson for animal activists,” said spcaLA President Madeline Bernstein.
