Call for National Hero Dog Award Nominations
Los Angeles – Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Los Angeles (spcaLA) is seeking nominations for its 25th Annual spcaLA National Hero Dog Award. This national award celebrates extraordinary heroic acts performed by dogs that save and/or protect people. The winning dog and two of its human companions will be flown to Los Angeles for the official ceremony at the Staples Center. Nominations must be from calendar year 2006.
Any dog that is a companion animal and not formally trained for rescues or as a police dog is eligible for this award. spcaLA accepts nominations from anyone who has or knows of a canine deserving of such an honor. Please send spcaLA your amazing Hero Dog nomination to:

To nominate a dog, one must submit an essay (100 words or less) describing the heroic act that occurred in the year 2006 with a name, address, and daytime telephone number. Heroic acts must have some way of being verified (newspaper clippings, police report, etc). Photos are optional, as they will not be returned. Nominations must be submitted by April 2, 2007.
Past winners include Butch & Dusty, Labrador retrievers who kept their owner warm and signaled for help with a flashlight while their diabetic owner laid passed out in a field; Shannon, a Golden Retriever/Border Collie mix that led her owner to her husband who was trapped under a tractor; Brutus, a Golden Retriever that took a bite from a poisonous snake to save his family; Shadow, a German Shepherd mix that fought off a grizzly bear that was attacking his owner; and a former shelter dog that saved a snowboarder’s life in Mammoth, Calif.

Celebrating 130 years, spcaLA is an independent, nonprofit animal welfare organization serving Southern California. There is no national SPCA, parent organization, or umbrella group that provides financial support to spcaLA. Donations run programs and services including Cruelty Investigation, Disaster Animal Response Team, Humane Education, and a variety of shelter services.
