Be a good Californian: Adopt a Shelter Pet

Lieu, Bernstein and other animal welfare advocates kick off “Adopt a Shelter Pet Month”

Los Angeles, CA – Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Los Angeles (spcaLA) President Madeline Bernstein joined Assemblymember Ted Lieu (D-Torrance) and other animal welfare advocates at a State Capitol rally today to urge support of Assembly Concurrent Resolution 91 (ACR 91), which declares September 2009 as “Adopt a Shelter Pet Month.”  ACR 91 gained unanimous support from the Assembly and is awaiting consideration in the Senate.
“It would create such a positive change if people adopted pets from shelters, an existing population, rather than encouraging unscrupulous breeders to continue adding to the pet overpopulation crisis,” said spcaLA President Madeline Bernstein.  ACR 91 encourages Californians to consider adopting dogs and cats from local animal shelters, thereby relieving overcrowding and helping to find more truly homeless pets new families.
“Budget reductions have increased the strain on local animal shelter systems, threatening the lives of thousands of animals,” said Assemblymember Lieu.  “This is why it is more important than ever to help local animal shelters by adopting a pet.”
To celebrate September as Adopt a Shelter Pet Month, spcaLA reminds potential new pet owners of two of its adoption programs: Purrfect Cat Companions and Underdog Rewards.  Purrfect Cat Companions reduces the regular adoption fee to only $180 when adopting a pair of felines.  The Underdog Rewards program reduces the price for adopting a senior pet or a pet who has been a guest of spcaLA for more than three months.  Underdog Rewards applies to dogs, cats or rabbits.
