CHIHUAHUAS REMAIN MOST ABUNDANT BREED AT spcaLA

UPDATE (12/29/2009):  Thanks to a generous donation by Colorado dermatologist Leslie Capin, spcaLA will fly Chihuahuas to the Denver Dumb Friends League.  The League, who is well-equipped to handle the overflow of these pets, will ensure the arriving Chihuahua are placed in loving homes.  Stay tuned for up-to-the-minute updates as flight plans continue to unfold rapidly.

UPDATE:  spcaLA is thankful for the outpouring of offers to adopt Chihuahuas.  In general, we are not able to do out-of-state adoptions for a number of reasons.  If you’d like to help spcaLA find local homes for pets like the Chihuahuas you read about and you are able, please consider making a donation.  To make a donation click here or call (888) spca-LA1, x232.

If you are looking to adopt a new pet, spcaLA recommends you contact your local shelter, spca or humane society.  While they may not have the overabundance of Chihuahuas seen at spcaLA, there is most likely a cat or dog waiting to find a good home.  Remember, all spcas and humane societies are independent organizations – there is no national spca or humane society that provides support.  At spcaLA, donations run programs like humane education, law enforcement, disaster relief and a host of shelter services.

Los Angeles CA – Breaking news out of San Francisco today is reiterating a fact known all too well by Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Los Angeles (spcaLA) : there is an overabundance of Chihuahuas in shelters.

spcaLA has more Chihuahuas than any other breed.  This has been the case for the past three years and the numbers are growing with each passing year.

“Chihuahuas are the most popular breed in Los Angeles, so it stands to reason we would see higher numbers of that breed in our two pet adoption centers,” says spcaLA President Madeline Bernstein.  “What’s alarming is how quickly the numbers are rising; about 100 more Chihuahuas came through our doors this year than last.”

The two best ways to combat this problem are adopting from a shelter or rescue group versus purchasing from a breeder and spaying and neutering pets.

spcaLA encourages people  to stop and think before they adopt.  Researching breeds will assist potential adopters in selecting a pet that fits best with their lifestyle.  Also, every dog has a different personality, so meeting dogs before adoption and asking questions of the spcaLA adoption counselors can help make the right match.
