spcaLA ANTICIPATES INCREASE IN GUINEA PIGS AT SHELTERS

Think Before You Adopt

Los Angele CAG-Force opens in theatres across America tomorrow starring computer generated guinea pigs.  Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Los Angeles (spcaLA) urges the importance of research and thoughtful decision making before welcoming guinea pigs or any other new pet into your home.
G-Force features guinea pigs as thrill seeking secret agents swimming, walking on hind legs, using an exercise ball and socializing with hamsters.  Guinea pigs can’t do any of these things.  They are actually quite delicate creatures who need large living spaces that are cleaned daily, and can live up to 8 years.
As was seen after the releases of Disney’s Dalmatians films and Beverly Hills Chihuahua, people get excited in the moment, adopt an animal, and then drop it off at a shelter once the novelty wears off and they realize the commitment is too much to handle.   This causes an increase of that breed or type of animal at shelters and rescue groups.
“Parents, be cautious about giving in to your child’s request for a guinea pig.  They require a lot of care and are absolutely unsuitable for small children,” say spcaLA President Madeline Bernstein.
It is important to learn as much as you can about guinea pigs or any animal before adopting.  If adopting a guinea pig is the right decision for you, spcaLA strongly encourages adopting from a shelter or rescue group as opposed to buying from a breeder or pet store.
