spcaLA Calls for National Hero Dog Nominations
Los Angeles - Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Los Angeles (spcaLA) is currently seeking nominations for its 27 th Annual spcaLA National Hero Dog Award. This national award celebrates extraordinary heroic acts performed by dogs that save and/or protect people. The winning dog and its human companion will be flown to Los Angeles for the official ceremony. Nominations must be from calendar year 2008.
Any dog that is a companion animal and not formally trained for rescues or as a police dog is eligible for this award. spcaLA accepts nominations from anyone who has or knows of a canine deserving of such an honor. Please send spcaLA your amazing Hero Dog nomination to:

To nominate a Hero Dog submit an essay (100 words or less) describing the heroic act that occurred in the year 2008 with a name, address, and daytime telephone number. Heroic acts must be verifiable (newspaper clippings, police report, etc). Photos are optional, as they will not be returned. Nominations must be submitted by April 3, 2009.
Past Hero Dogs include Taz, a Shepherd mix that kept his owner warm then went to find help as his owner lie on a cliff suffering from a broken pelvis; Butch & Dusty, Labrador retrievers who kept their owner warm and signaled for help with a flashlight while their diabetic owner laid passed out in a field; Shannon, a Golden Retriever/Border Collie mix that led her owner to her husband who was trapped under a tractor; Brutus, a Golden Retriever that took a bite from a poisonous snake to save his family; Shadow, a German Shepherd mix that fought off a grizzly bear that was attacking his owner; and last year's Hero Dog, Ellie who woke her sleeping owner as a wildfire was quickly approaching. Ellie and her owner fled and the house was destroyed by the fire.
