 spcaLA's NATIONAL HERO DOG AWARD

Presentation May 19 Star Plaza at Staples Center

Los Angeles - Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Los Angeles ( spcaLA ) will present its 27 th Annual National Hero Dog Award at 10am May 19, 2009 at Staples Center's Star Plaza in Los Angeles.

For more than two decades, spcaLA has recognized the heroic efforts of a dog that is a companion animal and not formally trained for rescues or law enforcement.

Past Hero Dogs include Taz, a Shepherd mix that kept his owner warm then went to find help as his owner lie on a cliff suffering from a broken pelvis; Butch & Dusty, Labrador retrievers who kept their owner warm and signaled for help with a flashlight while their diabetic owner laid passed out in a field; Shannon, a Golden Retriever/Border Collie mix that led her owner to her husband who was trapped under a tractor; and last year's Hero Dog, Ellie who woke her sleeping owner as a wildfire was quickly approaching.  Ellie and her owner fled and the house was destroyed by the fire.
