Relief for the Rescuers

spcaLA teams up with Purina to help animal agencies

Los Angeles, CA – Fresh from providing rescue and relief at the not-yet-contained Station Fire, Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Los Angeles (spcaLA) has teamed up with Purina to provide dog and cat food, as well as cat litter, to animal welfare organizations who responded to the call for aid.
“spcaLA has a long-standing program in which we distribute food to local rescue groups and government agencies, when there is need and we have the means,” said Madeline Bernstein, spcaLA President.  “Purina ONE will be providing food for organizations that, like spcaLA, provided rescue and relief for the pets of fire victims, or sheltered those victims.”
spcaLA is scheduled to begin distributing food and litter on Friday, September 11th at the P.D. Pitchford Companion Animal Village and Education Center in Long Beach (7700 E Spring St).
Organizations eligible to receive food and litter include spcaLA, City of Los Angeles Animal Services, Los Angeles County Animal Care & Control and local rescue organizations who lent a hand in Acton, CA during the relief efforts.   Purina will be providing Purina ONE dry dog and cat food, Friskies canned cat food and Tidy Cat conventional litter.  Organizations wishing to be considered for the distribution list should call (562) 570-4907.
spcaLA’s Disaster Animal Response Team (DART) responded to the Station Fire on Saturday, August 29th and remained there until Wednesday, September 2nd.  DART worked tirelessly to relocate, care for and feed more than 400 animals, including horses, llamas, sheep, goats, pigs, dogs, roosters and a buffalo.  While there, spcaLA completely diminished its supplies of food and litter.  Additionally, one of the DART vehicles was badly damaged and needs to be replaced.
DART, and all of spcaLA, is run entirely on donations – there is no national SPCA or humane society that provides support nor do they receive one penny in government funding.  Those wishing to support spcaLA should visit www.spcaLA.com.
