September to be Designated as
Adopt a Shelter Pet Month

Assemblymember Lieu Calls Attention to Urgent Need for Adopting Shelter Pets

Los Angeles CA – Assemblymember Ted Lieu (D-Torrance) announced today that he has introduced Assembly Concurrent Resolution 91, a resolution that declares the month of September 2009 as “Adopt a Shelter Pet Month,” urging Californians to consider adopting dogs and cats from overcrowded animal shelters.
“Adopting a pet from an animal shelter and caring for that pet for the rest of its life is a responsible way to relieve the overcrowding of these pets at animal shelters,” said Assemblymember Lieu.
Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Los Angeles (spcaLA) commends Assemblymember Lieu for introducing ACR 91 and championing the importance of adopting an animal from a shelter.
“spcaLA has seen a rise in relinquished pets due to foreclosures and the economic strife in Southern California and we are working harder than ever to place those pets into loving homes,” says spcaLA President Madeline Bernstien.  “We see just about every breed of dog and cat imaginable at our shelters.  People who are interested in adding a new pet to their family should remember to check spcaLA or their local shelter.”
To celebrate September as Adopt a Shelter Pet Month, spcaLA reminds potential new pet owners of two programs to promote the adoption of shelter pets: Purrfect Cat Companions and Underdog Rewards.  Purrfect Cat Companions reduces the adoption rate to $180 when adopting a pair of felines.  The Underdog Rewards program offers a reduced rate for adopting a senior pet or a shelter pet who has been a guest of spcaLA for more than three months.  Underdog Rewards applies to dogs, cats or rabbits.
