spcaLA's 30th Annual National Hero Dog Award™ to be Presented Monday May 7th

» May 3, 2012

Los Angeles, CA – Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Los Angeles (spcaLA) will present its 30th Annual National Hero Dog Award™ at 10am on May 7, 2012 in a ceremony at Nokia Plaza in downtown Los Angeles, thanks to the generous sponsorship of Natural Balance Pet Foods.

For thirty years, spcaLA has recognized the heroic efforts of a canine companion animal who is not formally trained for rescues or law enforcement.  spcaLA’s National Hero Dog Award™ is the first and original award of its kind.

Past spcaLA National Hero Dogs™ include Taz, a Shepherd mix who kept his owner warm then went to find help as his owner lie on a cliff suffering from a broken pelvis; Shannon, a Golden Retriever/Border Collie mix who led her owner to her husband who was trapped under a tractor; Brutus, a Golden Retriever who took a bite from a poisonous snake to save his family; Shadow, a German Shepherd mix who fought off a grizzly bear that was attacking his owner;  Miley a Terrier mix who roused her owner as poisonous carbon monoxide gas filled her home; Ronnie, a Wire Fox Terrier who defended his human and canine companion against a coyote intruder; and last year’s spcaLA National Hero Dog™, Diamond, a Pit Bull who shielded her human companion from the flames of a fire that was engulfing her home.

About Waterfront Beach Resort – A Hilton Hotel
The AAA Four Diamond award-winning Waterfront Beach Resort, a Hilton Hotel, overlooks the longest stretch of uninterrupted coastline in Southern California. Located in Huntington Beach, California, also known as Surf City USA™, the resort provides guests with breathtaking ocean views and fun in the sun for people (and pets!) of all ages. The resort is nestled on Orange County’s picturesque Pacific Coast Highway between Los Angeles and San Diego and features many family friendly amenities including bike rentals, beach bonfires & cookouts, surf lessons, and other countless activity offerings. Our specialists with the Waterfront Adventures team and your personal resort concierge can customize your stay to fill any appetite and fit any budget.  Surf City USA is considered the epicenter of cool, with an aspirational aspect that creates unique memories.  The Waterfront Beach Resort, a Hilton Hotel, compliments the destination with spectacular views from all of it's guest rooms exposing pristine sandy beaches and rich blue color of the Pacific Ocean.

Surf City USA has gotten more sophisticated since 1963, when the Jan and Dean hit Surf City topped charts. Though Huntington Beach retains some of its sand-in-the-cracks, beach-town personality, shops along Main Street, and fine-dining options have resulted in a dramatic transformation. As the moniker “Surf City” suggests, the action is near the water. Main Street is a promenade with lots of surf-wear and beachwear shops, a Surfing Walk of Fame and the Huntington Beach International Surfing Museum.  Adjacent to Huntington Beach Pier Plaza are restaurants including Duke’s and Sandy’s Beach Grill; the plaza often hosts street performers, art shows, farmer’s markets and live bands. A statue of a surfer at Coast Highway and Huntington Street captures the town’s spirit. The area offers three beaches: Huntington City Beach, Huntington State Beach and Bolsa Chica State Beach. All are popular with our guests for surfing and beach volleyball as well as for kite flying and just plain people watching. Bolsa Chica State Ecological Reserve offers 200 species of migratory birds in a salt-marsh setting with a 1.5-mile loop trail.

Major gateways include Orange County’s John Wayne Airport (20 minutes), Long Beach Airport (25 minutes) and Los Angeles International Airport (45 minutes). With many of our county’s major attractions nearby, including Disneyland, Disney's California Adventure, Knott's Berry Farm, the Aquarium of the Pacific, South Coast Plaza and neighboring Laguna and Newport Beaches, you are definitely a short drive from them all. Whether it be poolside cocktails, boogie boarding, bike rides on the boardwalk, watching the fun in the sun below your feet from high up on our Pier, or s'mores over a bonfire at sunset, The Waterfront Beach Resort delivers the ultimate Southern California lifestyle and experience.
