spcaLA Spay/Neuter Center
Feral Cat Guidelines
- All ferals must be brought to the Center in a trap.
- Felv/FIV testing is available for a fee.
- Felv/FIV positive ferals that are non-debilitated will be operated on with the owner understanding there is an increased risk of complications including death.
- If any kitten less than 6 months of age tests positive for FIV and is non-debilitated, it is recommended that the kitten be retested in 2 months.
- If any cat older than 6 months of age tests positive for FIV it is recommended to retest immediately with Western Blot.
- If any kitten or cat tests positive for Felv it is recommended to retest immediately with IFA.
- If a feral kitten or cat is debilitated and suffering, euthanasia is available and we will not perform surgery.
- Felv vaccines will not be administered to a Felv positive feral.
- We strongly advise humane euthanasia for any Felv/FIV positive ferals that will not be kept solely indoors to inhibit the spread of the disease to other outdoor cats.
- All ferals will have their left ear tipped.
- Ear mite treatment will be available at time of surgery if requested for a fee.
