spcaLA Accepting National Hero Dog Nominations

spcaLA is seeking nominations for its 25th Annual spcaLA National Hero Dog Award. This national award celebrates extraordinary heroic acts performed by dogs that save and/or protect people.

Any dog that is a companion animal and not formally trained for rescues or as a police dog is eligible for this award.

spcaLA accepts nominations from anyone who has or knows of a canine deserving of such an honor. To nominate a dog, submit an essay (100 words or less) describing the heroic act that occurred in the year 2006 and include a name, address, and daytime telephone number. Heroic acts must have some way of being verified (newspaper clippings, police report, etc.).

The winning dog and two of its human companions will be flown to Los Angeles for the official ceremony.

Past winners include Butch & Dusty (Butch and owner are pictured on left), Labrador retrievers who kept their owner warm and signaled for help with a flashlight while their diabetic owner laid passed out in a field; Shannon, a Golden Retriever/Border Collie mix that led her owner to her husband who was trapped under a tractor; Brutus, a Golden Retriever that took a bite from a poisonous snake to save his family; Shadow, a German Shepherd mix that fought off a grizzly bear that was attacking his owner; and a former shelter dog that saved a snowboarder’s life in Mammoth, Calif.
