Becoming a Volunteer
Please refer to the list of open volunteer positions and programs below. Print out the application, fill it out and return it to spcaLA’s Volunteer Services Department via email or mail. However you choose to send it, the application must have your original signature on it. It cannot be an electronic signature. Thank you!

Volunteer Opportunities
Select one or more of the open positions or programs listed below. You will have to indicate the specific shift of each position you are interested in on your application. You may apply for more than one shift as long as the schedule does not conflict.

Foster Parent† Learn More
Foster parents help animals who aren’t yet ready for adoption for a variety of reasons: age (puppies & kittens under eight weeks); illness; behavior; or because they are in protective custody or a part of our Animal Safety Net program.

Animal-Assisted Therapy (AAT) Volunteer* Learn More
Volunteers bring their own pets (any kind of animal) to nursing homes, hospitals, homeless shelters, hospices and other institutions on a monthly basis to provide the unconditional love only companion animals can offer.

Humane Education Volunteers* Learn More
Help spcaLA reach out to children, adolescents and adults by teaching respect and compassion for all living things. Additional screening is necessary to work with school-age children.

Dog Care
Work hands-on with the dogs in our care to enforce good behavior and prepare them for their new home. (Shifts & locations)
spcaLA P.D. Pitchford Companion Animal Village & Education Center
- Wednesdays through Sundays, 10:00am–5:00pm
South Bay Pet Adoption Center
- Wednesdays through Sundays, 10:00am–5:00pm
Minimum Commitment: One, two-hour shift for one day a week (any shift from 10am to 5pm). If your schedule allows, you may sign up for multiple days or longer shifts.

Cat Care
Attend to the cats in our care by providing food, water and a clean habitation. (Shifts & locations)

- Thursdays through Sundays, 8:00am–10:00am
South Bay Pet Adoption Center
- Thursdays through Sundays, 8:00am–10:00am
Minimum Commitment: One, two-hour shift for one day a week. If your schedule allows, you may sign up for multiple shifts.

Cat Socializer
Socialize the cats in our care throughout the day. (Shifts & locations)

- Wednesday through Sunday, any two-hour shift between 10am and 5pm

Grooming Salon Assistant
Brush/bathe the dogs at our Grooming Salon (professional grooming experience is preferred). (Shifts & locations)

- Wednesdays, 9:30am–1:00pm
- Thursday, 9:30am–1:00pm or 2:00pm–5:00pm
- Friday, 9:30am–1:00pm or 2:00pm–5:00pm
- Saturdays, 9:30am–1:00pm or 2:00pm–5:00pm
- Sunday, 2:00pm–5:00pm

Outreach Ambassador—Special Events
Attend events (community service fairs, expos, fundraisers, sports events, etc.) and have sufficient knowledge of spcaLA’s programs and services and provide information to the inquiring public. (More details)
Locations & Shifts vary.
Volunteers must be “on-call” for Special Events. Notice will be given at least three weeks in advance. There are 10–20 events scheduled throughout the year and they are generally on the weekends or weeknights.
