40 summer camp scholarship funds available for Long Beach teens
Los Angeles, CA — Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Los Angeles (spcaLA) is pleased to announce that the agency is a winner in Long Beach’s first citywide youth participatory budgeting pilot process, YOUTH POWER PB Long Beach. spcaLA will use the awarded grant money to offer scholarships (including meals and transportation) for a week of Friends for Life Summer Camp™ to 40 Long Beach youth.
Long Beach teens ages 14-17 from North and Central Long Beach are highly encouraged to apply at spcaLA.com. Scholarship applications must be received by 5pm on Friday, July 21st.
The win is a result of online voting between 20 non-profits that occurred in early May. Young people ages 13 to 26 were highly encouraged to vote and decide how Long Beach invests public dollars in youth. “We are very inspired that the youth of Long Beach voted for spcaLA to help shape the future of our community,” said Miriam Davenport, spcaLA Vice President. “I hope PB funding can be expanded, to allow organizations to build on the successes of the summer programs. For instance, participants in spcaLA’s Friends for Life Summer Camp could return as counselors next summer, and help a new group of youth.”
Camp scholarship recipients will participate in dog training, cat care, games, and activities, as well as expanded curriculum around empathetic choices, anger identification, conflict solving, and kindness towards others. Programming will also focus on developing future careers with animals.
Youth Power PB Long Beach, is the first city-wide participatory budget (PB) pilot process led by the Long Beach Office of Youth Development, The Nonprofit Partnership, and The Long Beach Invest in Youth Coalition anchored by Khmer Girls in Action.
