spcaLA Lauds Military’s Implementation of New Policy to Reimburse Pet Travel Costs

February 29, 2024

Los Angeles, CA –Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Los Angeles (spcaLA) commends the decision by lawmakers to include reimbursements for military pet transports in the 2023 National Defense Authorization Act. As details unfold, the policy is a positive step in recognizing the importance of the keeping families together, including the family pets.

The Defense Department’s Joint Travel Regulations outlines the rules for reimbursement of “reasonable and substantiated costs” during a permanent move. These costs can include transportation fees, veterinary costs for health certificates, microchipping, quarantines, boarding, and pet licenses.

spcaLA recognizes the significance of this new policy, which alleviates financial burdens for service members, and hopefully, will keep pets out of shelters.

“Sadly, in the past, we have seen pets of military personnel relinquished at the shelter, said Madeline Bernstein, spcaLA President. “That’s terrible for shelters, pets, and service members. We know pets positively impact mental health by reducing stress and anxiety – who could benefit from that more than our service members and their families?”

spcaLA extends its gratitude to lawmakers and military leadership for prioritizing the needs of service members and their pets, and for recognizing the vital role that animals play in enhancing the lives of those who serve our country.
