Protect Pets from Cold & Wet Weather

December 22, 2025

Los Angeles, CA — Just in time for Christmas, temperatures will drop and a Pineapple Express storm is predicted to deliver 4 to 8 inches of rain between Tuesday and Saturday throughout most of Los Angeles County and 6 to 12 inches is expected to fall over parts of Southern California’s mountain ranges, which could trigger mudslides. With the excitement of the holiday season, Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Los Angeles (spcaLA) reminds pet companions to take steps to protect their pets.

Winter Weather Tips:

  • Make sure your pets’ identification tags and microchips are current.
  • Please keep pets inside with a warm, dry place to sleep.
  • Dogs (and some cats) of all sizes can benefit from a sweater or jacket to keep them warm. Make sure the clothing is intended for pets and is the correct size.
  • After being outside, wipe off wet paws, legs, and stomach.
  • Don’t leave a pet inside a car during cold weather. Just as summer temperatures can rise quickly to a dangerous level, winter temperatures can drop and become unsafe.
  • Keep an eye on older or infirm pets as they are more sensitive to colder weather.
  • Brush your pets regularly to promote a healthier coat and circulation. Heaters make the air dry, which depletes moisture from your dog’s skin and fur.
  • Add an extra blanket to your pets’ bed or sleeping spot.
  • When traveling by car, be sure your pets are secure in a crate or with a seat belt harness. Skidding with an unsecured pet can be catastrophic.
  • Don’t leave pets unattended with a portable heater.

In addition to rain, wind gusts are also predicted, that could topple power lines. Always include your pets in your emergency plans. A  pet emergency kit includes items such as food, water, bowls, leashes/collars, blanket/bed, and medications. For a complete recommended list, please visit spcaLA.com.
