Los Angeles, CA — The small animal population at Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Los Angeles (spcaLA) is through the roof! spcaLA currently has more than twenty guinea pigs and rabbits available for adoption. Adoptable pets are available to view on spcaLA.com/adopt or in person at spcaLA pet adoption centers in Hawthorne and Long Beach.

In early January 2024, fifteen guinea pigs were surrendered to spcaLA when their owner was no longer able to care for them. Within days, the herd grew by five when one of the guinea pigs gave birth.

“We’re hoping to reach fans of small animals who are ready to adopt,” said Madeline Bernstein, spcaLA President. “Guinea pigs do well in pairs, and many people find they’re a good first pet for kids, with supervision of course.”

Guinea pigs are known for their gentle nature and sociable personalities. They thrive in environments where they receive proper care, including a spacious habitat, balanced diet, and regular interaction with their human companions.

Guinea pigs need large, solid bottom cages with plenty of Timothy Hay for bedding, a hutch for hiding, balls or toys to play with, and a chew for their teeth, which grow continuously. They also need plenty of fresh clean water, kibble, a small amount of fresh fruits and veggies daily, and oranges or a vitamin C supplement to keep them healthy.

But what they need most is a loving home! Guinea pig adoption fees are $15; rabbits $30-40. spcaLA pet adoption centers locations and hours:
