40,000 Pets Adopted! spcaLA’s public-private partnership celebrates 15 years of service

Los Angeles, CA – Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Los Angeles’ (spcaLA) celebrates the 15-year anniversary of the spcaLA P.D. Pitchford Companion Animal Village & Education Center on Thursday September 29th. Since the grand opening in 2001, over 40,000 pets have found a new leash on life at the Village.

To celebrate, spcaLA is hosting a brief private reception at 10:00am on Thursday September 29th with refreshments to toast fifteen years of success. spcaLA leaders, major donors and dignitaries will be present. Press is welcome.

The Village is a model program of public and private collaboration between spcaLA and the City of Long Beach. spcaLA and Long Beach Animal Care Services work together to provide adoptions, licensing, and animal control.

“The Village revolutionized the way shelters are designed and managed, setting a replicable new benchmark in cost-efficient, life-preserving care for rescued animals,” said Madeline Bernstein, President spcaLA. “The Village is the first of its kind in this hemisphere and emphasizes that animals must be respected and cared for properly.”

This is an excellent example of city government working with the private sector to make life better for people and animals,” said Ted Stevens, Manager of Long Beach Animal Care Services. “The number of animals finding homes in the City of Long Beach has reached historic levels, while intake is down and live release is up.”

The Village provides maximum health protection, safety and comfort for shelter pets through the facility’s design. For pet owners and adopters, the Village offers a variety of programs, all of which improve the human-animal bond and reinforce the importance of kindness to animals. Services include summer day-camps and youth violence-prevention programs; a variety of obedience and specialty training classes for pets and their companions; the spcaLA Marketplace which stocks high-quality, all-natural pet foods and supplies; the spcaLA Grooming Salon that offers professional and self-service grooming; and the spcaLA Pet Hotel which provides excellent, individualized care for pets while their owners are away.

The spcaLA P.D. Pitchford Companion Animal Village and Education Center is located at 7700 E. Spring St., Long Beach, CA (inside El Dorado Park).
