In 2001, a group of visionary donors and animal welfare experts came together to build a model program of private and public collaboration between spcaLA and the City of Long Beach: the P.D. Pitchford Companion Animal Village & Education Center (7700 E Spring St., Long Beach, CA 90815). The Village model was the first of its kind in America, now often duplicated, and revolutionized the way shelters are designed and managed, setting a replicable benchmark in cost-effective, life-preserving care for abandoned and abused animals. Visitors to the Village can adopt animals; find lost pets; renew and purchase dog and cat licenses; take obedience, agility, fun nose work, and other specialty spcaLA Dog Training classes; board and/or groom pets at the spcaLA Pet Hotel & Grooming Salon; and purchase pet supplies at the spcaLA Marketplace; volunteer; and children can attend spcaLA Friends for Life Summer Camp™ or participate in a pet care patch workshop.
