Pet Reunifications Underway at spcaLA

January 10, 2025

Space available for evacuees in need of pet housing

Los Angeles, CA — The fires in Southern California have forced thousands of residents and their pets to evacuate their homes. In response, Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Los Angeles (spcaLA) designated the spcaLA Pet Adoption Center in Los Angeles as a space to temporarily house the pets of evacuees. Pasadena Humane Society sent the first wave of people and animals on Wednesday morning. Just a few days later, some reunifications have begun. The families, who are experiencing unfathomable tragedy, are ecstatic to reunite with their beloved pets, and their pets feel the same.

The population at the facility is in flux as pets are arriving and leaving. Evacuees in need of pet housing assistance may call spcaLA at 323-730-5300 to confirm available space.

Volunteers and staff are working hard to provide medical care, food, shelter, and emotional support to the frightened and displaced animals. A family from Altadena left their five dogs — four Huskies and a small Terrier named Skittles, at spcaLA on Wednesday. They retrieved their pets on Friday morning, and were “thankful that [spcaLA] gave their dogs a place to stay and lots of love.” With their family reunited, they steady themselves for what’s next.

For those who would like to help:

Despite the devastation and uncertainty of the days to come, spcaLA stands at the ready to be of assistance to the people and pets of Los Angeles, and their animal welfare partners.
