Pre-trial Set for Man in Possession of Fighting Gamecocks

Los Angeles, CA – Aurelio Gonzales (DOB: 09-22-1975) will begin pre-trial proceedings on July 19, 2016 for charges of Possession of Gamecocks for Fighting Purposes, in accordance with California Penal Code 597j(a) in Los Angeles County Superior Court (DA case # 6ES01879). The charges stem from an investigation by humane officers of Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Los Angeles (spcaLA).

Gonzales, currently on probation for the transportation/sales of narcotics and evading peace officers, was placed on Post-Release Community Supervision (PRCS) in October of 2015 as a result of AB 109, the bill meant to reduce the number of inmates in California’s state prisons. Per his conditions of probation, Gonzales was not to engage in criminal conduct.

In April 2016, spcaLA received assistance from the South Bay Realignment Task Force to conduct a probation compliance check, which revealed additional evidence of the suspect being involved in cockfighting.  spcaLA also received assistance with the impoundment of the animals by LA County Animal Care and Control, Major Case Unit (MCU).

spcaLA is the only private animal welfare organization that is also Law Enforcement in the city of Los Angeles.  spcaLA Humane Officers hold the same powers of Peace Officers in the state of California when investigating animal cruelty.
