spcaLA Applauds Los Angeles City Council Vote to Keep Families Together

January 24, 2024

Renters and their pets avoid eviction

Los Angeles, CA — The Los Angeles City Council voted 13-0 yesterday to protect tenants from being evicted for unauthorized pets in their rental units that were adopted during the pandemic. Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Los Angeles (spcaLA) supports this effort to keep families together and in their homes.

Tenants must inform property management within one month and does not apply to pets adopted after January 31, 2023.

“All shelters are seeing an influx of animals that are surrendered due to financial hardships, including loss of housing,” said Madeline Bernstein, spcaLA President. “This step may only affect a small group of people, but it will mean the world to them.”

spcaLA recently expanded the Animal Safety Net (ASN)™ program to include families experiencing homelessness. ASN provides temporary foster care for pets to allow their human companions to seek services.

spcaLA currently has more than 200 animals in care. Anyone interested in adopting or becoming a foster volunteer may visit spcaLA.com.
