In early May, 13 to 26 years old voted on programs centering on community care, housing, health and wellness, and transportation programs. Their votes decided how the City of Long Beach invests public dollars in youth.

Camp scholarship recipients will participate in dog training, cat care, games and activities as well as expanded curriculum around anger identification, conflict solving, empathetic choices, anti-bullying and kindness towards others. Programming will also focus on developing future careers with animals.

“We are very inspired that the youth of Long Beach voted for spcaLA to help shape the future of our community,” said Miriam Davenport, spcaLA Vice President. “I hope PB funding can be expanded so organizations can build on their successes. For instance, spcaLA could offer more weeks of summer camp or provide camp during school breaks.”

Youth Power PB Long Beach, the first citywide participatory budget pilot process, provides non-profit organizations undertaking work aligned with the goals of the Youth and Emerging Adults Strategic Plan. Funding for the Youth Power PB Long Beach program is provided by Measure US.
