Reunifications and longer stays for pets of fire evacuees

Los Angeles, CA — On January 8th, Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Los Angeles (spcaLA) converted the spcaLA Pet Adoption Center in West Adams into housing for the pets of fire evacuees. Today, the pet adoption center resumes adoptions. Meet adoptable pets Wednesday through Sunday, 11am to 3pm or view pets at spcaLA.com/adopt.

During the past few weeks, staff and volunteers cared for the beloved furry and feathered family members of fire evacuees. Some people were able to retrieve their animals quickly, but others, who have lost their homes are still scrambling for pet-friendly housing. “Pet restrictions should be lifted or reexamined during this time,” said Madeline Bernstein, President spcaLA. “While we fight price-gouging, this is a good opportunity to encourage pet-friendly housing and address bad pet policies, like breed restrictions.”

Pets who remain in the care of spcaLA have been relocated to a different facility for the duration of their stay. A few pets have been relinquished, including Nova (pic), after her family lost their home in the Eaton fire.
