Stray Dog Comes to spcaLA Shelter with Earrings

Los Angeles, CA – Nikki, a 5 month old Terrier mix, was wearing studded earrings when she arrived at the spcaLA South Bay Pet Adoption Center in Hawthorne. Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Los Angeles (spcaLA) strongly urges owners to resist the urge to pierce their pets’ ears.

Simply put, a dog’s (or cat’s) ears are sensitive and piercing them causes them unnecessary pain. They have no idea why this foreign object is in their ear and may work constantly to get it out. The piercing may become irritated and infected, resulting in more pain and trips to the vet.

The spcaLA veterinary staff removed the earrings, but a small puncture remains. Over time, this is expected to heal, but Nikki will always have a small reminder of her previous owner’s desire to adorn her unnecessarily.

Nikki is available for adoption at the spcaLA South Bay Pet Adoption Center, 12910 Yukon Ave., Hawthorne CA, 90250. The pet adoption center is open to the public Wednesday through Sunday from 10am-5pm. They can be reached at 310-676-1149.
